Kevin Maher, President/CEO of Ultrathera Technologies, introduces PointScribe, a breakthrough in handwriting education, at booths 1824-1826.
ESD: What is PointScribe?
KM: PointScribe is a multi-sensory, interactive method of teaching students to handwrite. It’s a software product that uses visual, audible and tactile stimulation to teach. Students actually write on the touch screen as they progress through each lesson. PointScribe comes alive with interactive animations, colors, music and sounds that captivate students’ attention. Students stay motivated and engaged because the lessons seem more like video games than handwriting lessons. Kids love it!
Students improve their skills, build confidence and develop muscle memory as the lessons reinforce the correct start and stop points and the proper formation of shapes, numbers and letters. All parameters, such as shape type and size, color, animations, sounds and music are easily modified to maintain a high level of interest and challenge. PointScribe’s powerful data management system tracks, analyzes, quantifies and charts students’ handwriting performance and provides valuable data for evidence-based teaching. PointScribe is a significant improvement in the way we teach and students learn to handwrite.
ESD: How does it work?
KM: It’s all about motivation and consistency. PointScribe uses visual, audible and tactile stimulation to motivate and guide the student through each lesson. It consistently requires that each letter be formed with the correct start and stop points and in the proper stroke sequence. A student who starts in the wrong place, moves in the wrong direction, lifts the stylus inappropriately or moves outside the lines must start again. It provides a standardized method for teaching handwriting skills. It helps prevent bad handwriting habits from forming. PointScribe can be viewed as a patient teacher sitting with every student, watching every stroke, every time—correcting a stroke when needed.
ESD: What is PointScribe: WRITE FROM THE START?
KM: We envision a future where all students will learn their handwriting skills correctly when they begin handwriting. We wish to help make this vision a reality by introducing a program called 'PointScribe: WRITE FROM THE START.' It offers educational institutions that are interested in adopting PointScribe large volume discounts, online training and implementation guidelines. PointScribe saves both time and money and is an efficient, practical method of teaching all students to handwrite correctly. Above all, it will result in students with improved written communication skills.
ESD: What does PointScribe require?
KM: PointScribe utilizes interactive touch screen technology. It runs on most computers with at least 2 GB RAM. It’s compatible with most tablet PCs, touch screens, Magic Touch add-on touch screens and electronic white-boards. PointScribe is available on Windows XP and Vista operating systems. A Mac version is being released mid-year 2009. Go to www.Ultrathera.com to purchase PointScribe or download a fully functioning seven-day free trial.

Above all, it will result in students with improved written communication skills.

One of my pet peeves is mess. I've always been highly organized so things were in the right place (maybe not dusted). But a while back I developed epilepsy and now have short- and long-term amnesia. I don't recall where I put things myself! When others make this worse with their sloppiness, I'm not happy. Put things where they belong!
