The students at the African-American Academy in Seattle Public Schools added a dynamic element to their math competition: the Qwizdom Student Response System.
"The kids were really excited to use Qwizdom. It is wonderful," says fourth grade Teacher, Ms. Pinchback. The schoolwide competition featured students working individually and in groups to solve difficult math problems. Students entered their answer first individually on their Qwizdom remotes; then after group discussion time, they entered a group response. Since the Qwizdom Q4 radio frequency clickers allow students to type in multiple digit answers with fractions, decimals and negatives, they were not limited to close-ended multiple choice questions. Some questions even required Qwizdom's exclusive sequencing answer mode.
"From a facilitator's perspective, I like the Qwizdom system because it gives every student a voice. Everyone has a chance to input what they believe to be the right answer," says NO LIMIT Math Facilitator, Sandy Gady. "The chance for all students to be heard is powerful. Qwizdom classroom technology made this a huge success!"
The students were grouped with students in other classrooms and grade levels. The entire academy was divided into four divisions: K–1, 2–3, 4–5 and 6–8. The students were given 10 individual minutes to solve the WASL type problem. Then the students were given more time to work as a cooperative group to analyze the solutions, problem solving techniques and agree on a common answer. The students used Qwizdom remotes during both portions. To identify which student had which remote, students entered their school ID number. This way, there was no concern over which remote the student was given; making distributing 416 remotes to anxious students easy to manage.
Qwizdom looks forward to volunteering their time at other schools and educational institutions for similar events.
